Dental recontouring, which is also called tooth reshaping and odontoplasty, is a relatively quick and painless procedure in which small amounts of tooth enamel are removed in order to change the length, shape or surface contours of the tooth.

What is it used for?
Recontouring is one of the most conservative cosmetic procedures. By the help of recontouring it is possible to correct minor imperfections and improve overall dental health because the minor crevices and overlaps in which plaque or tartar can accumulate are removed. But recontouring is not a substitute for veneers or bonding. Recontouring is not helpful when there are deep chip or fracture and large fillings from earlier procedures.
In order to see what sorts of improvements are possible, you can see the photographs before recontouring and after recontouring so you can understand what recontouring can and can not do for your teeth.
If recontouring rest inutile for the elimination of the tooth imperfections, the treatment can be combined with bonding. In bonding is a composite resin is used to repair or restore fractures, chips or cavities. Bonding is the use of a tooth-colored composite resin (plastic) to repair a decayed, chipped, fractured or discolored tooth.
Recontouring is usually done without anesthetic because it doesn’t affect the living pulp of the tooth. And one or two visits are needed to complete the treatment.
Recontouring can be done only if the overall tooth structure is sound. In order to determine the size and location of the tooth’s pulp, the center of the tooth where the nerves and blood vessels are found, your dentist will take X-rays. Recontouring may not be done if there is a thin layer of enamel and if the pulp lies close to the surface.
You don’t need a special care after the procedure because there aren’t any artificial materials that are used in the recontouring procedure. If a composite resin is used to bond the teeth you should also need to take extra care to keep the teeth clean in order to prevent staining.
